National Geographic Traveller Photography Competition 2013

A few months ago I entered into National Geographic Traveller’s 2013 photography competition.

The competition is split into a number of categories, including specific themes such as colour, action, faces, rural and urban. I selected the shot below and entered it into the urban category. I was recently informed by the editorial staff at the magazine that the photograph had won its category. I’m delighted to see the shot in print, and grateful to National Geographic Traveller’s judges for choosing it. I’m also very grateful to Isabelle – who kindly let me take her portrait, despite knowing nothing about me.

Cannelle Bulard, or, ‘A Portrait of a Surfer’

I met Cannelle Bulard in the French town of Anglet at a restaurant on the beach, eating moules-frites and drinking ice-cold Coca Cola. She approached the table with her board before introducing herself. I then asked her a few questions and teased her about whether she was any good. She shyly informed her audience that she had travelled most of the world on tours and recently become champion of Europe. Needless to say, the teasing stopped.

This shot was taken just after she came out of the water later that day. She had been surfing for a few hours.

I have since licensed the shot to Rip Curl, who sponsor Cannelle, for use on their site here.

Street Photography II, or, ‘In the Metro’

This, the second post in a street photography series, focuses on the Parisian metro, and the characters found in it.

These are two of the more controversial photographs I’ve taken.

Street Photography I, or, ‘The Two Saints’

The next few posts in this gallery will include some of my street photography from 2011. These shots have been posted elsewhere, but not yet to this gallery. I consider these images, and this period, extremely important in shaping me as a photographer. Please note that whenever possible, I obtain permission from the subjects of my photos.

America III, or, ‘The Wynn, The Cosmopolitan, and the Desert’

This will be the last post in my America series. Of the 1,000 photographs I took in Las Vegas, I feel those I have included in these three articles best communicate my experience of the city.

I stayed in the Wynn hotel for a few days. It might be regarded as the epitome of opulence. I certainly enjoyed my visit. I also spent an evening listening to the Jennifer Keith Quintet, who were excellent.

America II, or, ‘The People of Las Vegas’

I was in Las Vegas on business, but I spent some time walking the strip during the evenings. I asked a number of locals if I could take their portraits, and almost all obliged. Below is a selection of my favourites. Included is what I consider the best shot from the trip.

Sometimes, what is missing from a photograph says more than what is present.

America I, or ‘Landscapes in Colour’

I recently spent a week in Las Vegas. The next two or three entries in this gallery will contain images from that trip,  which included a drive from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

The below are a few landscapes.
